It is my greatest pleasure to welcome you to the first presbyopia management workshop in the region, organised by the Department of Ophthalmology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
Presbyopia is a universal age-related phenomenon that afflicts every individual from the age of 40 years onwards. With our ageing society and digitally-dependent population, the need for effective and individualised solutions for presbyopia is ever greater. While it has traditionally been treated with reading glasses, recent decades have seen improvements in intraocular lens, laser refractive techniques and pharmaceutical therapies emerge as potential spectacle-sparing options. At the same time, incremental improvements in optical designs have also made spectacles a more attraction option than before. How do we choose the right therapy for our patients?
In this inaugural presbyopia management skills transfer workshop, we would bring you through the landscape of presbyopia management and different management strategies available. We will use peer-reviewed clinical evidence of various treatment options including glasses, the different types of laser refractive correction for presbyopia, pharmaceutical options, as well as intraocular lenses. You will also hear from leading regional and international experts, who will share their insights and experiences with various corrective strategies of choice.
The goal of presbyopia management is not to determine the single best treatment for presbyopia, but to find the most appropriate option for your unique patient. We hope this course will help you achieve this goal.

Dr David Chen is an Associate Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology at National University Hospital, Singapore. He performs refractive surgeries such as small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), femtosecond-assisted laser in-situ keratomileusis (femto-LASIK) including PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision, and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). He also routinely performs cataract surgeries including femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implantation.
Dr Chen’s research interests are in clinical innovation for age-related eye conditions including presbyopia, cataract and glaucoma. He has been awarded more than S$500,000 of internal and national grant funding to develop novel solutions for community ophthalmology, of which he has patented a technology for a portable smartphone slit lamp device. He is also supported by the National Medical Research Council to perform animal research on presbyopia.
To support his clinician-innovator journey, Dr Chen also completed the Singapore Biodesign Innovation Fellowship program, a national-level competitive fellowship for clinician-innovators and global affiliate of the prestigious Stanford Biodesign program. He is the first and only ophthalmologist to complete this program in Singapore and hopes to utilize this unique vantage point to develop and optimize translational solutions for presbyopia.

Dr Andrea Russo, MD, PhD, is the Medical Director of the Centro Oculistico Bresciano located in Brescia, Italy, where he performs refractive and cataract surgery. He also holds a position as postdoc fellow of University of Brescia, Italy.
Before founding his own clinic, he spent years observing other practices mainly in the US and UK. He developed and patented the technology to scan the retina exploiting smartphones, and founded D-Eye Company now producing and delivering smartphone ophthalmoscopy worldwide.
The mission of Dr Russo and that of the Centro Oculistico Bresciano is to meet and possibly exceed patients’ expectations by providing world-class experience in a smart and classy city facility. The added value consists of the customization of all services, taking advantage of the best ophthalmology equipment available from the industry.
Dr Russo has held the position of consultant to Staar Surgical, contributing to the marketing of ICL. His research has led to over 40 peer-reviewed publications, and international presentations and lectures. He was awarded the Premio Applico (Società Oftalmologica Italiana) in 2014 and received numerous grants in his career.

A/Prof Clement Tan is Group Chief, Ophthalmology for the National University Health Service cluster and Director of the Division of Graduate Medical Studies at the National University of Singapore.
After completing his basic and advanced Ophthalmology training in Singapore, A/Prof Tan completed a fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology at King's College Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, under the supervision of Drs Paul Riordan-Eva and Fion Bremner.
In addition to a busy Neuro-ophthalmology practice, A/Prof Tan is also substantially engaged in cataract surgery and has been intimately involved in the training of cataract surgeons.

Dr Fam Han Bor is a Senior Consultant with the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Fam is active as a clinician, researcher and instructor, having given over 100 presentations in international and regional conferences.
Dr Fam’s research has been published in leading peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals such as the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the Journal of Refractive Surgery, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. As an educator, he has conducted numerous LASIK instructional courses, medical-in-service and live surgeries throughout Asia.
He is widely sought after as a respected global key-opinion leader in the field of phacoemulsification, intraocular lens design, refractive surgery, corneal topography, ocular wavefront aberrations and visual optics. He has a keen interest in the design and optimising of new phacoemulsification and intraocular lens technologies. He is an active member of the prestigious IOL Power Club, an expert group dedicated to improving cataract outcomes.
His research interests lie in Visual Optics, Wavefront Science, IOP Calculations, Corneal Topography, Contact Lens and Eye Modeling and Biofilms. He graduated from the National University of Singapore, with a Masters in Medicine (Ophthalmology) and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He received his subspecialty training in cornea and refractive surgery at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Dr Yeo is currently a Senior Consultant with the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Yeo completed his medical training at University College London, United Kingdom in 2004. At the same time, he also obtained a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with first class honours. Dr Yeo was conferred Masters of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2010. He subsequently attained Fellowship with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London) in 2013, and is also a Fellow with the Academy of Medicine Singapore.
Dr Yeo is active in research and has published in various peer-reviewed journals and has been involved in several research grants. His current research interests are in biometry and anterior segment surgery. His areas of ophthalmic practice include anterior segment, cataract and general ophthalmology with particular interest in complex anterior segment and cataract surgery. He is currently the Deputy Head of Eye Operating Theatre Services.

Dr Tong is the President of the Singapore Optometric Association and sit on the advisory panel for the Clinical Optometry Practice, under Ministry of Health, and National Myopia Prevention Programme, Health Promotion Board.
Dr Tong believes that vision is the most important asset in our lives. Mr Tong founded eyesight.sg to advocate primary eye care to optimise vision and eradicate preventable blindness.
Myopia is a disease, and people deserve to know this and take preventive measures to control the progression. In Dr Tong’s practice, he focuses on driving impactful solutions by helping patients live healthier lives and making informed decisions through education and differentiated experiences.
